Border
collie dogs:
The origins
of the word "collie" are uncertain, it could be a derivative of
coley or coal meaning black, possibly the Welsh word for faithful "coelius"
or perhaps that Scottish sheep type colley is a clue. The word "border"
obviously relates to where the collies were first used, on England's borders
with Wales and Scotland. A Welsh prince was no doubt describing a "Border
Collie" when in 943AD he wrote about an amazing black-and-white dog
that took sheep to the fields in the morning and returned them safely to
the fold in the evening.
Try to imagine a time before the first border collie - however did shepherds
manage to herd their flocks without the partnership of an always alert and
agreeable - Border Collie ?
